Brescou Fort, with its extremely ancient fortifications, sits off the coast at Cap d'Agde, on the only volcanic island in the Golfe du Lion. However, the existing fort was designed by Vauban and built in the 17th century, later becoming a National prison (from the 18th C to the beginning of the 19th C).
